A steel square billet is a semi-processed product. It is manufactured by melting steel scrap. It is a rolled square section that is used for making a wide range of steel products through a procedure of heating the billets in the furnace. Once the billets become soft, they are stretched and shaped as per the requirement of the application. The billets are passed through a number of stands to produce the desired products out of them.
While producing the billets, a number of factors are taken into account such as the adjustment of chemistry and temperature with homogenization of steel before sending the liquid steel to the billet castor. We also take care of the sampling and testing of the Tundish liquid steel and final billet chemistry. The scrap that is used as a feed material is carefully examined to spot any impurities before recycling. The DRI purchase is also checked on the basis of set quality perimeters. The charge mix is formed depending upon the properties of inward material.
Thorough visual inspections of the billets are conducted to identify and correct defects like central porosity, surface cracks and rhomboidity. These tests are conducted to ensure that the produced billets confirm to the quality standard certificates, IS2830:2012 & IS2831:2012, provided by BIS.
Most of the square billets manufactured by Indostar are used in-house. The rest of them are sold to other organizations. Indostar produces a varied range of square billets:
