LET’S KNOW TMT REBARS (SARIA)
In TMT bars, a range of grades are available such as Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 550, Fe 550 D and Fe 600. Among them, Fe 500, and Fe 550D are the most widely used TMT bar
In TMT bars, a range of grades are available such as Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 550, Fe 550 D and Fe 600. Among them, Fe 500, and Fe 550D are the most widely used TMT bar grades for upscale construction, including flyovers, bridges, high-rise buildings, etc.
UNDERSTANDING NOMENCLATURE
- TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanical-Treatment
- Rebar is a type of steel bar used to strengthen concrete,
- ‘Fe’ is a symbol in chemistry use for Iron,
- 415, 500, 550 are variants of TMT Steel Rebars available in the market,
- 415, 500 and 550 refers to the minimum yield strength of the bar, (Yield Strength is the maximum strength a steel can endure beyond which it begins to permanently deform)
THERMO-MECHANICAL TREATMENT (TMT)
Thermo-mechanical treatment (TMT) is a metallurgical process that combines heating and deformation to improve the mechanical strength of the steel. It’s also known as “new generation” steel.
How it works
- Steel is heated to a high temperature, such as 1200–1300°C
- The steel is deformed through mechanical processes like rolling, forging, or compression
- The steel is cooled rapidly, such as through water quenching
- Benefits TMT steel has high strength and ductility, TMT steel is resistant to corrosion, and TMT steel is weldable.
Uses of TMT steel:
- Reinforced concrete structures
- Earthquake-resistant buildings
- High-rise buildings
- Bridges and flyovers
- Industrial and commercial structures
- Foundation and footings
- Slabs and beams
- Columns and pillars
